Donald Fagen - The Nightfly re-releases

Donald Fagen's brilliant 1982 album The Nightfly has been reissued three times in recent years. To clear up any potential confusion, here's an overview:

The Nightfly (DVD-Audio)

1. DVD-Audio

This disc, released by Rhino on 29 October, 2002, contains a 5.1-channel mix of the album in 48 kHz 24-bit PCM, DTS and Dolby Digital, plus the stereo mix in 48 kHz 24-bit PCM and Dolby Digital 2.0.

The Nightfly (DualDisc)

2. DualDisc

DualDisc is hybrid format tried out by Warner Music and other record companies, introduced in 2004. It's a double-sided disc (you have to flip it to change side) that consists of a CD and a DVD disc bonded back-to-back, only slighly thinner in order to approach the required 1.2mm thickness for all 12cm discs.

This particular DualDisc contains the Red Book CD on one side while the other side is identical to the DVD-Audio of the Nightfly album.

`The Nightfly trikogy (MVI)

3. MVI

MVI is yet another format tried out by Warner Music. It can hold music, video and other data in an interactive format on a single disc that's compatible with DVD-Video. One of the titles issued on MVI is 'The Nightfly trilogy' (release 20 November 2007), which is perhaps a rather odd title because it contains all three of Donald Fagen's solo albums, including Kamakiriad and Morph The Cat. There's a fourth disc with bonus material. The DVD content is not DVD-Audio however. The albums' 5.1-channel mixes are included in DTS format.

There are several other albums on DVD-Audio by Donald Fagen (Kamakiriad, Morph the Cat) and Steely Dan (Gaucho, Two Against Nature, Everything Must Go). Check the overview in our store.

For other MVI releases check the Amazon MVI store.
